Robin van Persie was the only guaranteed starter

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has stated that only Dutch striker Robin van Persie was a guaranteed starter in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team squad last season. Following his sensational move from Arsenal to Manchester United in the summer transfer window, the Dutch international quickly announced himself as the pivotal point in Manchester United’s title winning side last season, scoring 30 goals in his debut season with the club.

And that left England international fearing for his future at the club with Fergie sometimes asking the former Everton man to play in midfield or on the wings. Rooney was also overlooked for the club’s crucial UEFA Champions League second leg match against Real Madrid with the industry of Danny Welbeck preferred to Rooney behind RvP.

And the Northern Ireland international defender stated that only the players producing their best week in and week out would be picked by Sir Alex and now, all the players, including Robin van Persie will have to prove their worth to new manager David Moyes to be guaranteed a place in the side every week.

Evans also mentioned unless it was van Persie or even Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at the club, there was no one who was guaranteed a spot in the first team. Evans stated that if a player didn’t perform, he would be out of the side and if another player didn’t give his best in a couple of games on the trot, Sir Alex wouldn’t think twice before putting another player in.

Moyes will be looking to emulate Ferguson as he looks to win his first title with the club with Robin van Persie set to be the star man for the side with the future of Wayne Rooney still up in smoke after a bid from Chelsea already rejected.
